What are Stretch Marks?
According to dermatologist, stretch marks are the off-coloured stripes or narrow streaks formed on the skin as a result of swift stretching of skin or weight changes.
They mainly appear on the abdomen due to pregnancy or obesity.
In dermatology, they are termed as Striae.
They are formed due to hormonal changes related to pregnancy, puberty, hormone replacement therapy, etc. Stretch marks can be commonly seen on waist, thighs, lower backs, hips, breasts, arms, and buttocks.
How are these stretch marks formed?
The skin of the human body consists of three main layers:
- Epidermis (the outer layer)
- Dermis (the middle layer)
- Hypodermic (the deepest and third layer)
When the connective tissue is stretched due to the expansion and contraction of skin, the stretch marks starts developing on the dermis or the middle layer of the skin.
Continuous stretch on the skin leads to the weakness of the collagen and elastic fibres which in turns causes tearing. Due to this, the normal production cycle gets damaged or interrupted.
This results in the formation of fine scars under the epidermis or the top layer of the skin. Initially, they appear red or pink, but gradually, they turn into thin silvery line.
Causes of Stretch Marks?
Stretch marks are not to be classified as a disease condition, but they are scars formed due to the contraction and expansion of the skin as highlighted above.
They are caused basically by excessive stretching of the skin. Their appearance depends on your skin type.
Other cases of the appearance of stretch mark includes;
- The physical stretching of the skin at the end of pregnancy.
- Rapid weight gain especially on the arms and thighs.
- Use of certain medications, lotions, pills or creams containing steroids and corticosteroids.
- Diseases of the Adrenal gland such as Cushing’s syndrome and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome
- Genetic disorder
- Hormonal changes during puberty
- Heredity conditions.
- During puberty stretch marks appear on the boy’s shoulders and back and in case of girls they appear on their hips, thighs and breasts.
Symptoms of Stretch Marks

No one would ever like to have stretch marks on their skin. They commonly appear on places where large amount of fats are deposited.
Some of the symptoms which help to recognize the development of stretch marks are as follows:
- The skin becomes pink, flattened and thin before the development of stretch marks.
- Development of red, pink, or purple lines on the skin.
- The affected area becomes soft to touch.
- At the initial phase, these lines appear wrinkly and somewhat raised.
- With the passage of time, these lines convert into silver or white in colour.
- They may also appear in patches of parallel lines.
- They appear as a scar.
Home Remedies for Stretch Marks
Stretch marks can make you feel self-conscious and uncomfortable about your appearance. But, there is nothing to worry about.
Fortunately, there are several natural home remedies that can help prevent stretch marks and also reduces the appearance of old ones.
Wondering how to remove stretch marks? The remedies are below:
1. Use Plenty Water
Water is known for carrying oxygen and nutrients to all parts of the body.
Keeping your body well hydrated helps protect the skin from many kinds of problems and also aids in the process of detoxification.
It also helps keep the skin supple and restores elasticity.
To get rid of stretch marks, try to drink one to two glasses of water several times during a day. Experts say drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water per day is the best way to keep the body hydrated.
It will also make your skin soft and help maintain its elasticity. It is advisable to avoid coffee, tea or soda though.
2. Try Sugar
Sugar is used as a natural exfoliant for the skin.
Natural white sugar is one of the best natural remedies to get rid of stretch marks.
Take a tablespoon of raw sugar with some almond oil and a few drops of lemon juice. Mix it well and apply it on the stretch marks and other skin areas.
Gently rub the mixture on the skin for about 8-10 minutes every day before taking a shower.
Do this for a month or so until your stretch marks fades away.
3. Aloe Vera For Stretch Mark Removal
Aloe vera is considered to be the most effective homeopathic remedy for stretch marks and various skin problems. It is known for its healing and soothing properties.
Remove the outer layer of the aloe vera leaf and bring out the sticky gel from the inside of the leaf.
Rub the gel on the affected skin area, leave it for 15 minutes and then rinse the skin with lukewarm water.
Alternatively, make a mixture with one-fourth cup of aloe vera gel, oil from 5 vitamin A capsules and 10 vitamin E capsules.
Apply the mixture carefully on the affected area until it gets fully absorbed. For better results, apply this mix daily.
4. Using Castor Oil For Stretch Marks
Castor oil is considered to be a healing treatment for skin problems such as wrinkles, age spots, moles, dark spots, fine lines and pimples.
It can also be used to get rid of stretch marks.
Apply some castor oil directly on the stretch marks and gently massage the area in circular motions for 5 to 15 minutes.
Wrap the area with a thin and clean cotton cloth. Using a hot water bottle or a heating pad, apply some heat to the affected area for at least half an hour.
Repeat this process for 30 minutes daily for a minimum of one month to notice positive results.
5. The Cocoa Butter Effect
Cocoa butter being an excellent natural moisturizing butter is famous for its anti-wrinkling and anti-aging properties also helps nourish your skin and reduce the appearance of stretch marks
Massage the affected area with cocoa butter at least two times a day. Repeat the process for two months and notice the reduction in scars.
Alternatively, mix half cup of cocoa butter with one tablespoon of wheat germ oil, one teaspoon of tea kernel oil, two teaspoons of grated beeswax, and vitamin E oil.
Heat the mix until the beeswax melts. You can store the mixture in an airtight container in the refrigerator and apply it to your stretch marks two to three times a day.
This mixture will make your skin more hydrated and smooth.
6. Olive Oil
Olive oil is rich in antioxidants and nutrients, which are effective for skin problems including stretch marks.
For healing stretch marks:
- Warm the extra-virgin olive oil slightly and rub it gently on the affected area. This will improve the blood circulation and reduce the stretch marks to a great extent.
You can also mix olive oil with vinegar and water and use it as a night cream.
This will keep your skin stay moisturized and also exfoliate the skin.
7. Egg White
To get rid of stretch marks, egg whites are beneficial as they are rich in proteins and amino acid.
Whip the whites of two eggs. Clean the affected skin area with water and then apply a thick layer of egg whites with a makeup brush.
Let it dry completely and then rinse the area with cold water.
After this, apply some olive oil to moisturize the skin. Repeat this process daily for two weeks for better results.
8. Lemon Juice
Lemon juice is another easy treatment for stretch marks. The juice from a lemon is naturally acidic and helps in reducing stretch marks, acne, skin injuries, and scars.
Take out juice off some lemons.
Rub it gently on the in a circular motion for 10 minutes on the stretch marks. Then rinse it off with warm water. You can also mix equal amount of lemon juice with cucumber juice.
Apply this mixture directly on the stretch marks to get adequate results.
9. Potato Juice
Potato juice is rich in minerals and vitamins which promotes restoration and growth of skin cells.
Cut into thick slices of a medium-sized potato. Take one pieces of the sliced potato and rub it gently on the stretch marks for a few minutes.
Make sure the starch from the potato covers the affected area.
Allow the potato juice to dry then wash the affected area with lukewarm water.
10. Alfalfa Leaves
Alfalfa leaves contains the eight essential amino acids, which are effective for maintaining proper skin health.
It is also very rich in vitamin E, vitamin K, and proteins which help in nourishing the skin. It also has anti-fungal agents, which detoxifies the skin.
Take some alfalfa powder and mix it with a few drops of chamomile oil to form a smooth paste. Gently rub the paste into the affected area two to three times a day.
Repeat this daily for a few weeks for significant improvement.
Take two-three apricots.
Cut them and remove their seeds and grind them into a smooth paste.
Rub the paste directly on the stretch marks and leave for 20 minutes.
Then, rinse it with lukewarm water.
Follow the process for one month and see the promising results.
There are many ways to remove stretch marks.
Usually, a combination of methods works better. Within a few weeks, you should notice those unsightly lines lightening up and becoming less visible.
